the care and feeding of large work

Once a painting gets large enough to make the viewer step backward, it takes on an impact that feels like an environment.

Finding ways to store the work to get a feel for it is important. I like to live with a painting for a while before I can comfortably say it’s done. This is a struggle for a lot of artists. I get a sense of calm like a problem solved, but if I scrutinize anything there always something more that could be done.
